FOS-DTN model

Product description (FOS-DTN): Double-cell Twisted Nematic (DTN) liquid crystal shutter offering ultra-short pulses of OPEN state (exposure-times) of less than 50 microseconds (0.05ms). FOS-DTN shutter comprises two (2) pieces individual TN shutter elements bonded together to form a complete stack.

Product characteristics:  FOS-DTN shutter provides ultra-short pulses of OPEN state suitable in applications where short exposure periods are required down to 50 microseconds (0.05ms). Maximum transmittance when in OPEN state approximately 30% for incident unpolarised light. High level of extinction when in CLOSED state. Custom sizes from 5 x 5mm up to maximum 14 * 16 inches available.

Technical description:  FOS-DTN liquid crystal shutter comprises two individual liquid crystal shutters bonded together to form a complete "stack". Application of voltage to the first shutter switches the complete "stack" to the OPEN state, whereas application of voltage to the second shutter thereafter switches the complete "stack" back to the CLOSED state once again.

It is therefore the ACTIVATION switching speeds of the two individual liquid crystal shutters that control the switching cycle of the complete "stack" and as such employment of the slower RELAXATION switching mechanism is avoided for a single exposure period ("pulse" of OPEN state period).

Moreover, since the ACTIVATION switching speed is a direct function of the applied voltage, the switching of the complete "stack" for a single exposure cycle comprising CLOSED-OPEN-CLOSED state is extremely fast when elevated operating voltages are employed.

The time difference (phase shift) between when voltage is applied to the first shutter and when voltage is applied to the second shutter thereafter controls the overall "time duration" of the complete exposure pulse.

It is also noted that the minimum time-period ("re-loading" time) between successive exposure-periods is limited by the summation of the RELAXATION switching speeds for the two individual liquid crystal shutter elements. In practice, the "re-loading" time is approximately 20ms at room temperature.
